About
S3P—Safety in Spine Surgery Project—Is Dedicated to Making an Impact of Spine Surgery Safety
Our Mission
The mission of the Safety in Spine Surgery Project (S3P) is to enhance the quality, safety, and value of spine surgery through research, development of best practices, education, and by advancing a systems-based approach to optimize patient outcomes and care delivery.
Our Vision
To eradicate preventable harm in spine surgery, ensuring that every patient achieves the highest possible quality-of-life improvement through safe, effective, and innovative surgical care.
Our Work
Since the Institute of Medicine’s landmark report1 and call to action in the 1990s, there has been a dramatic improvement in the quality, safety, and efficacy of spine surgery.
Today, we better understand the importance of systems-based approaches to improving surgical safety and much has been done to emphasize the need to optimize culture, create dedicated teams, and utilize processes, checklists, and Best Practice Guidelines to decrease variability in care. However, much work remains to be done.
Founded in 2016 by Dr. Michael Vitale, The Safety in Spine Surgery Project (S3P) is at the forefront of this work. S3P is continually adding to the growing knowledge base and educating medical professionals to ensure that spine patients receive safer surgical care with consistently better outcomes.
